The Warrior

I’ve been accounted for many things and responsible for many sins, even against my friends. I plead with you to listen to my guilt, though it seems as if a nightmare that speaks of the vilest thoughts in my heart.

I’ve stood before the cross, afraid of its fair sight. It’s wonder and triumphant glory made the stains of my sins appear on my flesh as a reminder of my shame. My hands were covered with the blood of guilt, my head conscious of the heavy betray. The Lord’s tree bled on the right side, and I began to be afraid. I couldn’t face the brave warrior’s embrace as he hung there to die for me - turning, I fled.

I light a candle to give light to the dark, damp room I hid in, but it seems to shroud the room with darkness instead. In the solitary state I’ve been in for days, the heavy silver and bloody sword by my side served as a constant reminder, telling the tale of my once beloved pride over again.

The serpent, my once conscience, who once told me falsely where my pride should be. All is now gone, only to be replaced by burning guilt. All that I’ve gained from this is the loss of a friend whom I loved, the warrior who told me to honor him before all else. Why have I been so weak and tempted? I, who knew your glory, tasted your love, felt your presence, why did I trade it all away for momentary offerings?

The candle blows out, and a cold sweeps over the room.

“Who comes here?”

My eyes are weak, and the apparition before me seems monstrous.

“Art thou some god, some angel, or some devil? Why com’st thou?”

And like the voice of hope, it spoke, “I’ve died for you as you sacrificed me. I’ve tasted death for you, there on the cross, and rose again. Don’t be afraid and ashamed, for though you’ve forsaken me I’ve forgiven you and still love you. Through the cross shall the kingdom be sought by each soul on this earthly journey that thinks to dwell with the Lord.”

As He disappeared, I began to weep and pray. My hearts longings turned back to Him, where the hope of life waits for me. For my heart’s desire is great, and my hope of protection is directed to the Cross. Though I’ve betrayed him by letting other things enter my heart, He still endured to love me.

I hope you guys aren't confused about what you just read. I wrote this this past weekend as a reflection of what easter means to me. I've been reflecting over the momentary things that I've let take over my own heart lately, which has slowly been distracting me away from God. And since easter is a the story of Christ's death and ascension, I thought of the story from Judas' point of view. He was the one who betrayed Christ, yet Christ died for his sins and still loved him.

But wait, before any credit is given to me I have to explain:

There's an old tenth-century English poem called "Dream of the Rood" which is basically a poem written from the point of view of the cross (rood means cross) and how Jesus, the warrior, hung to die for all. I basically took that poem and mixed it with Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, in the scene where Caesar's ghost appears to Brutus.

It occurred to me that both Judas and Brutus sold out/sacrificed a dear friend to them, and the resulting consequence ended up ruining them. But although the narrator is both the fictionalized version of Judas and Brutus, the narrator also reflects us since often in our lives we let other things take precedence, thus casting aside or sacrificing Christ.

Smothered Family Love

I've always felt really blessed for having such a big extended family. I suppose that's one of the benefits of having a lot of siblings, you end up having a big extended family all up in your business (my siblings better have a lot of kids when they get old).

Since I've stopped going to church on Sundays in the beginning of this year (no, this was not a new years solution) I haven't seen my extended family in a while. My entire family goes to one church - aunts, cousins, grandparents, great aunts and uncles etc. - so Sundays always felt like a big family get together.

Anyway, so during my weekly dinner date with my grandparents tonight, my aunts and uncles happened to be there, and since I haven't seen them in a while, I was surprised that they were all up to date with my business. Upon reflection, I think it might be my mom who's spreading the gossip. Le sigh, and just when I thought I could trust my mom with details about my life.

For some reason, and I highly suspect that it's because I'm the oldest of the oldest, my family is very curious about my love life. I mean, you'd think that Annabelle and Vinay would be a hotter topic, but no, every time I see them a more absurd version of my invisible boyfriend pops up.

I've blogged about this before, and so far the ridiculous, absurd details of the invisible boyfriend that my entire family is convinced that I am dating is:

1) That his name is Yunchi
2) That he's Chinese
3) That he's very rich

But today I learned a new detail about my invisible boyfriend: that he speaks Cantonese. This came up during dinner, and I swear it took every ounce of self control not to burst out laughing.

Uncle: Ann-Ann, I heard your boyfriend is Cantonese.

Great Aunt (who's still visiting from the Philippines): Really? Say something in Cantonese.

Me: *trying to recollect Amy Tang's various phone conversations with her dad* Uh ...

After denying it again and again, they were somewhat convinced that perhaps my invisible boyfriend truly is invisible, so invisible that he doesn't exist. The conversation continued:

Grandma: When you go to Korea, make sure you find a nice Korean boy.

Great Aunt: No no, don't marry a Korean, he'll make you his slave.

Uncle: Go to Philippines and find a nice Filipino boy.

Aunt: You mean, find a nice Chinese-Filipino boy.

Great Aunt: Ahhh yeah, those are the best.

Uncles: *Gives each other mid-air high fives*

Good gravy. And the reason they've mentioned my going to Korea is because the other day, I mentioned to my mom that I was interested in going to Korea after I graduate. She ended up lecturing me about the dangers of traveling to a foreign country by myself and flat out refused, so I thought that was the end of that. But apparently, behind my back, she's been telling my relatives that I AM going there, like it was written already written in stone or something.

In a way, some good things came out of my mom's white lie to them, I've learned just to what extent my family will go through to be with me. Hypothetically, if I ever went to Korea, it would only be for one year, but my family made it sound like I was going to be there for the rest of my life. My grandparents started lamenting and insisted on coming with me, while everyone else started making vacation plans to visit me in the summer.

How cute, I really do feel odd sense of smothered love.

I accidentally hugged my aunt tonight (my family doesn't hug) and she was super surprised. I eased the awkwardness by talking about not eating meat.

Oh and speaking of not eating meat, lent is over! I can eat meat again, although I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be eating it regularly. Lent was an interesting experience: I learned to experimentally cook and I've noticed that my skin has gotten clearer, plus the fat roll on my stomach slightly disappeared. Hoorah. Lent was pretty much pain free for me, it was only hard in the beginning when I was tempted by all the chicken Matt keeps bringing home from work.

Ending this post with a random, trivial, unimportant fact: family dinners are very confusing sometimes. Since we're Chinese-Filipino everyone converses in three languages all at once, it's always a random mix of Fukien/Tagalog/English, but if the old old old generation is there, they throw in Mandarin to the mix. I just nod and say yes.

Strangers Again

During small group this week, Tabitha brought up how Johnny posted WongFu Production's new short, "Strangers Again" on fb. Amy Tang and I both agreed that this was the best short they've done in a while, and we agreed that everything about it was pretty much perfect, so I was surprised that no one else liked it.

The general consensus was that it was depressing, which I suppose it is in some ways, but for me the short was the perfect portrayal of how a relationship usually goes. You either get married or break up. I think this is because I have a more realistic/cynic view of relationships, which I've probably developed over the past few years. In my last post, I mentioned how I haven't had a crush on anyone recently (the last crush I had was 8 years ago). I do get mini one-day infatuations on people, but that's hardly a full blown crush where all you do is think and day dream about that person (going out with someone is not a crush, it's a relationship).

I don't think this means I'm secretly a cold hearted person on the inside, I think it just means I know how to turn my feelings off. I remember explaining this to Amy Tang one day, and she like, "how do you just turn your feelings off? You can't help liking someone." That's not how I see it though, to me, I always have to make a mental decision to either like someone or not, and usually, I have too many reasons not to like someone. Not because I'm picky, it's usually because someone else will benefit from my not crushing on a certain someone. Don't ask, crushes are complicated.

Anyway, so the reason why I'm writing about this is because Ariel mentioned that she was in the process of writing a somewhat depressing blog post, and since I was in the mood to be moody, I decided to write something depressing as well, although I don't know if I've managed to depress you guys at all. I don't really have anything depressing to write about since I haven't been depressed lately, and now that I think about it, it's really weird how I want to be depressed so I can write about something depressing.

Ever think of what Paul did when he was depressed? I think Paul's theme song for his life would be 'Trading my Sorrows.' When he's pressed, crushed, persecuted and struck down, he just said "Yes, Lord." He traded his sorrow and shame for the joy of the Lord, although he probably had to overcome some difficult, personal emotional struggles to do so.

And I guess that's why I thought Strangers Again is such a good short. Although Josh was growing increasingly unsatisfied with the relationship, it would have been easy for him to stay in that comfortable dead zone. Instead, he overcame his personal, emotional struggles and broke up with Marissa since in the long run, it would make her happier.

---edit---
It just occurred to me that the moral of this post would to crush responsibly.

Waiting for the Rice to Cook

A very dedicated fan to by blog, *ahemTabiahem*, has been bugging me about my lack of blog entries lately. I've been very uninspired to write anything lately, and it's because life has become very mundane and uninspiring.

So, while waiting for the rice to cook, I decided to blog a bit since I got tired of arguing with Matt. (Or rather talking: he's in the kitchen with me at the moment doing whatever on his blackberry. We were talking about the consequences of not eating meat and how a mysterious someone keeps on stripping the clementines in the house. We both suspect Aaron.)

Back to my mundane life. As I was saying, I really have been uninspired lately. It's not like I have a crush on someone to blog about (actually this is really bad example since I haven't crushed on anyone in a really long time). The other day, John drove me home and he was telling me about his ideal woman which, and not for the lack of better words, was interesting. John is a really complicated person, he always asks these questions that have no answers (and it's no secret that I get really annoyed at him for asking these questions).

He was all, "would you settle for someone less than your ideal type? Why do we have to settle for less, can't we just have our ideal type?"

I think he was asking this rhetorically, or maybe he was actually serious. In any case, because of this I've decided to give my Mr. M some imperfections, just so he won't be Mr. Perfect:

1) He's going to be annoying and nag a lot
2) He's going to have some annoying weird habit, like plucking his chin hair with tweezers or something
3) He will love meat a bit too much

Does this count as settling, if I lower my standards? And why does it feel like I'm constructing a character for a novel?

Ok, the rice is done cooking. My mom keeps on looking over my shoulder to see what I'm doing on her laptop and is nagging me to buy her Princess Margaret Lottery tickets online. Plus Matt has gone all annoying again, he's all "what's the meaning of Easter? Is that when Jesus died? Is the easter bunny going to be good to me this year?"

SummerSummerSummer

I'm done school!

For now that is, until summer school starts. Vinay always makes fun of me for taking summer school, but that's because he doesn't understand that I get absolutely bored without school to bug me. I didn't bother with summer school in first year, and seriously, it was the longest four months of doing nothing of my life. My brain turned into mush.

Plus I secretly really like being a student. Even though I may complain about it, there's nothing like the feeling of accomplishment you get at 5 in the morning after laboring tediously over an essay.

Anyway, so now that I have a lot of free time in my hands, I've come up with a list of things to occupy myself with:
1) The stop motion project Amy and I are making next Monday
2) Perfect playing the guitar badly
3) Learn Korean so I can rap very badly in Korean with Hannah and David on Wednesday
4) Start using photoshop (I got this for my birthday and haven't touched it since I installed it on my laptop)
5) Read LOTR

Ok time to zzzz, I have work early tomorrow but I felt like I should update since I haven't updated in a while. Truthfully, I've written three other blog posts that I was suppose to update here but they sound a bit bleh, not that this isn't bleh as well, but this is less bleh than the other three. I think I've become more self concious about blogging O.o Wonder how that happened.

And good luck with everyone who still has exams to write! I realize I finished earlier than everyone else.

How to make your friends read your blog

A step by step guide on how to expose yourself to your friends

Step 1
Make them feel like they’re missing out on the not-so fascinating events in your life by not reading about it on your blog.

How it’ll play out:

You: [Start off by laughing to yourself] Yesterday, my professor said the funniest thing ever.

Friend: And?

You: And what?

Friend: What did your professor say?

You: Oh, I already blogged about it. I don’t want to have to repeat myself.

Friend: Is this another one of your cheap tricks to making me read your blog?

You: What? Psh, no. But you’re really missing out by not reading my blog, seriously. Read my blog now, rawr!

Step 2
Step one didn’t work out so well for you? No problem. Just bribe your friends.

What to bribe your friends with: money (not recommended unless you’re the type of person who brushes your teeth with ground up moon stones, imported fresh from the moon, and eats diamonds for breakfast, unless of course, you’re really desperate), food, editing their essays for them and free exposure (will be explained on the next step).

Step 3
Provide free exposure of your friends on your blog. If you choose not to actually expose your friends on your blog and just used this as a bait to lure them, then congratulations, you’re probably sneakier than you give yourself credit for (unless you’re just too lazy to actually blog about your friends).

How to expose your friends:
1) Talk about how awesome and great they are
2) Write embarrassing stories about them
3) Write about fluffy times you had together in the past

Step 4
Accidentally leave the URL to your blog lying around somewhere. Make sure it’s spelt correctly.

Making sure your blog is spelt correctly is very important. I went around for a year telling people my blog was noodlebowl not noddlebowl since I didn’t realize I spelt noodle wrong when I created this blog. #fail

Step 5
Repeat steps 1-4 until successful. You’re bound to get at least one person to read your blog.

Ending this post with pictures of the fun Bear and I had this week:

Secretly, I think my family likes it when I draw faces on eggs. I haven't heard any complaints from them yet.

Bear kisses, $1.00. No refunds.

As I was taking these pictures outside my house, I heard my neighbour coming out of her front door. I quickly tried to hide the Bear Kisses stand so she wouldn't think I was so weird. She saw me and asked, "Are you planting bears?"

I then had to explain the entire story to her. >.< Never have I ever felt so dorky.

Bear has no takers. No one wants to kiss Bear except for Yong. =P

Bear loves Harry Potter and swears he is up to no good.
(Wait, we've decided that Bear is a 'he' right?)

The only time the piano is ever used in our house. A very typical trait for Filipino families is to have a piano in the house even if no one knows how to play it.

Bear wears Tabitha's stolen 3D glasses and plays with Ariel's tic tac toe mug.

I will definitely miss Bear when he leaves :(

Chilling in the library, yo

This is sad to say, but I think I am getting tired of libraries. Since I commute to school from the far away land of Vaughan, I generally mouse around in the library a lot. It’s quiet, safe, and dry (this is especially important in the winter). I have two favourite libraries on campus: Robarts and Gerstein. E.J. Pratt used to be my favourite hideaway, but it’s too full of humanities students. This sounds hypocritical since I’m in humanities myself, but I prefer nerding out with science students since they look cute when they furrow their eyebrows in concentration (kekeke).

But lately, since it’s finals and everyone is striving to impress their parents with A++’s, both Robarts and Gerstein have become jam packed with students. There are several downfalls to this:

1) People with little to no knowledge of library etiquette find their way in the midst of hard working nerds.

Example: Yesterday, I spent the entire afternoon with Annabelle writing an essay but I found it extremely hard to concentrate since sitting at the table next to us were two large loud-mouthed social bugs. One of them had a friend come visit, and since they wanted to talk, they ran around the bookshelves trying to find a spot to sit and chat. Books are not soundproof, and unless you have a gigantic wall of books super glued together, they will not muffle the sound of your giggling and gossip. Afterwards, the two of them sat back down at their tables and continued talking. I guess this is my fault for not having earplugs, since as I waited and looked around for someone to tell them to shut up, I noticed everyone had pulled out their bright orange earplugs and plugged them in their ears.

I was really annoyed though, since one of them had braces and it made their SSS super sharp. Rawr.

2) The bathrooms end up being a mess and reeking.

Example: Today at Gerstein, the bathroom reeked from being overused. Plus the toilet seat in one stall had come unhinged, which I found out about through a rather unfortunate way.

But in general, girls who put their make up on and groom themselves up in the bathroom make me uneasy. Several reasons why:

i) I always think they sneak glances at me thinking “Poor, sad, little girl can’t even afford a comb” or “Someone give this girl oil paper blotter, quick!”
ii) They take up sink space. It’s annoying because you have to tiptoe around them without being rude as you wash your hands. But wouldn’t it be funny if someone was applying lipstick and you pushed them by ‘accident’ and their lipstick smudged all over their face? *Insert evil laughter here – mwahahahaha*

3) It’s constantly crowded.

But I can’t really complain about this, it just means everyone is studying hard in library, unlike me who takes up space in the library writing unnecessary blog posts. (It’s rush hour at the moment, I don’t feel like commuting home like a sardine stuffed in a tin can)

Nota Bene: I wonder if there’s a way to harness brainpower and convert it into energy?

Ok that’s it for now, I think this is getting lengthy and strenuous to read. I was originally going to post a sad story but ended up writing this, I wonder how that happened.

Yawns x 9000

Yawns

I need to get out of my lazy mode. I've been feeling uncreative and unmotivated to plan events lately, i.e. my board game day. I've been in this mode for so long I didn't even bother writing captions for the pictures in my last post.

Side note to Amy, Manley, Matt and Duy, if you guys still read this blog: Sry I've been super lazy. I will make an event to celebrate my birthday soon. (Oh and Leo also)

As tradition for Victoria Day, my friends and I always go to Center Island. Since this year will be our fifth year (hoorah!) we're going to have a 90's music theme and I'm thinking of making a relay race for everyone. This is going to be exciting! Be prepared for a lot of strenuous activity aside from laughing too much.

Doot do do ...
The only other piece of exciting news I have is that my great aunt came to visit for three months from the Philippines (she arrived Friday). I saw her today and she fed me so much I had no choice but to take a really long nap afterwards (this is what happens when I don't get shifts on Sundays, I end up eating too much and napping. I'd rather be making mullah).

Alright, tomorrow will be hardcore essaying day. I will snap out of my lazy mode!
(Yeah, this post is actually quite pointless, but I'm sure you guys are all used to that by now, kekeke.)
(DID I JUST WRITE KEKEKE? Oh man, all the Korean variety shows I've been watching is infecting my brain.)
