Being a Better Friend

Turns out, the library closes at 5 in the summer on weekends.

Ugh. I could have gone to Center Island instead and not feel guilty for ditching Tabitha's birthday celebration thingy. (Soooooo sorry Tabs :()

Yesterday, my friend, Owen, came to LH with me. I was embarrassed to take out my bible (the one I got from the Winter Soiree) because it's falling apart from _______. (I want to fill in the blank and say from being over read, but I think it just fell apart from being abused in my bag.) So, I bought another one. I made sure this one is sturdy and won't fall apart easily. And this time, if it does fall apart, I will make sure it'll fall apart from being over read.

Owen is pretty cool, he said he wants to come in next Friday with his own bible, so that he won't have to share with my broken one. He even volunteered to bring one for me. I met Owen at work, and yesterday whenever he introduced himself as my coworker, the first thing people said was, "oh from Sears?"

Actually, Owen is a fellow teacher at ELC with me. He teaches math and science. We became friends because when I first met him, I told him what my name was. (Sorry, this just means that we just became friends after we introduced ourselves to each other.)

Yeah ...

Anyway, I've been feeling kinda down lately because I've been ditching everyone's social events. I swear I have valid excuses. I feel out of the loop with how people are doing, and texting is becoming tedious because I have to first explain why I ditched their event, and then say sorry, and then ask how they're doing. Too much work.

Good news is that I don't have work on Fridays anymore :D

Ok, will work harder to be a better friend. Maybe I'll go on msn more often or something.

Stuck inside blogging ...

Since I am feeling extremely unmotivated to write my essay (that's unfortunately due tonight) I will blog instead.

I just had lunch with Matt and my mom, and they reminded me about the time my mom sprained her ankle.

Basically, a few weeks ago, as Matt was getting his hair done at a Korean Salon, my mom decided that she would go outside in the parking lot and jog around (unlike me, my mom is super active). As she was jogging, she tripped on the pavement (so she says) and sprained her ankle. All the Korean ladies in the salon panicked, they brought her in, was about to call 911, and gave her ice.

The next day, she went to the hospital and came home with an ankle cast and a pink cane to help her walk.

As bad as it seems, as she was repeating the story of what happened to Matt and I, we just could not stop laughing. How do you sprain your ankle on the pavement?!? My mom is so strange sometimes. She's really hyper and is always on the go and is unable to sit still. Her hands always has to be busy with something, if not cooking it's baking, if not baking she's out ballroom dancing, if not ballroom dancing she's jogging, if not jogging she's out mountain biking, if not biking she's busy trying to kill Henry (she has an ongoing feud with the rabbit because Henry sheds a lot in the summer).

Armin asked me the other week what my relationship with my mom was like, and I said it was more of a friendship relationship. Though she's my mom, I've always seen her more of as a friend. She's never really bossed me around or has told me what to do unless I do something to aggravate her. As long as I'm in school she's happy. (A part of why she's more of a friend than a mom also has to do with the fact that I grew up with my grandparents as a child and not with her.)

So I've been reflecting a lot about my teaching job lately, which I put a lot of effort into. A lot of people tell me that the money I'm receiving is not worth it since I have to do extra work outside of work, like making lesson plans or downloading worksheets on my own time.

But to me, it doesn't matter. Though I may not get paid for the extra work, I don't care since I just want to do my best and get good results with the kids, and having them learn something is more important. The way I see it is that you can't make a business out of other peoples lives, meaning, though I may get paid for doing this, the money comes second and the actual job comes first.

Anyway, back to the essay. The topic is on the Native American Renaissance and I'm trying to dismantle the assumption of why there has to be a renaissance in the first place. The topic isn't boring, it's just that I'd rather not have to write the essay.

Saw this around the interwebs and it immediately reminded me of what happened to my mom.

Native Literature, Disney Professors and Math

For some reason, I thought my seminar presentation was next, next Thursday, when in fact, it's next Tuesday. I feel doomed. I haven't even started reading the book yet.

Truth is, because the weather has been awesome (so awesome that people are dropping dead) I've been loosing motivation to study. In fact, I'm loosing motivation to do anything at all. I just want to sit and nap all day and drink Iced Caps and get fat and hyper.

My seminar class is so-so. I actually despise seminar classes, just because you're forced to talk and my brain doesn't think fast enough when I'm around smart people.

The seminar class I'm taking right now is on, and don't laugh or yawn while reading the title please, Native and North American Literature. The other seminar class offered in the summer was on Jane Austen WHICH would have been awesome to be in because I've already read half her books, which would cut my readings by half. Unfortunately, that class filled up as fast as you can say Mr. Darcy, so I got stuck in the Native Literature class.

I'm secretly (actually this is not a secret) a fan of Canadian Literature. I just think that there's so much to tell about Canada and how cool and awesome Canadians are and that American Literature is overshadowing Canadian Literature because American publications make a lot more money. Anyway, point is, we need more Canadian books.

The books I'm reading for this class is not all Canadian, but it's on Native Americans (duh). Native Americans are interesting storytellers. The novels, at least the ones I've read, are very choppy and non-linear and incoherent which is perfect because when I write my novel, it's going to be exactly like this: confusing.

Unfortunately, my love for Canadian Literature does not surpass my love for sleep so no matter how much I berate myself into reading that book for my presentation, I will most likely put sleep first.

The one thing that makes this class more bearable is my professor, though. He's tall and lanky and reminds me of a Disney cartoon character. He looks really young, and gets very descriptive with stories that is irrelevant to what we're talking about in class (such as his argument with the woman who works at Robarts, his love for Dixie bikes and floofy drinks). It's hard for me to imagine that he has his PhD because he doesn't act like it.

By this I mean, you know how some people with PhD's act like they're all that? As if the world revolves around their big brain? Not my professor. He acts like the average Joe who has romantic musings about moving to France when life here gets boring.

Anyway, the other week I was in the campus bookstore when I spotted this book on math. I don't know what came over me, but I bought it. See, there's a reason I major in English, and that's because I can't do math. When I was in high school, I used to cry over my gr.10 math homework. That's how much I hate math. But for some reason, when I saw this book, I was suddenly inspired, as if I was going to read the numbers off the pages in awe and the mysterious world of math would suddenly make sense to me.

Maybe it's my predisposed Asian math genes that compelled me to purchase this book, or the heat affecting my brain, but now I'm stuck with this book since the bookstore has a stinky 2 week return policy (not that I've ever returned a book in my life).

Life goal #379 that will most likely never get accomplished: read math.

I'm pretty sure reading math will be just as daunting as reading Chaucer.

Chaucer:
Of smal coral aboute hir arm she bar
A paire of bedes, gauded all with greene,
And theron heeng a brooch of gold ful sheene,
On which there was first writen a crowned A,
And after, Amor vincit omnia

Math:
38 x 263 = 30 x 263 + 8 x263
= 30 x 200 + 30 x 60 + 30 x 3 + 8 x 200 + 8 x 60 + 8 x 3
= 6000 + 1800 + 90 + 1600 + 480 + 24
= 9400 + 570 + 24
= 9994

If only life was more simple :/

As it turns out, my professor minored in math. Whaaa...

Ice Cream, Break Downs and Table Legs

Yesterday, while I was teaching this little kid grammar, we read a short paragraph on ice cream and how awesomely awesome it is.

Afterwards, his eyes got all big, and he begun wailing his arms up in the air saying, "it's so true! Ice cream is really good!"

This kid is the best. He must really love ice cream. And now that I think about it, this is probably the same reaction I have with Harry Potter.

Me: [wails arms in the air] Harry Potter is more awesome than your face!

Anyway, so lately, a couple of people, who shall remain nameless, have been having break downs since they're stressed about the amount of stuff they have to do. I can totally sympathize with them, since stressed is my surrogate middle name at the moment.

The fact that they're breaking down got me worried for a moment, since I thought I would probably be next in line. For a while, I walked around thinking, "ok this is it, at any moment now I am going to burst out in tears! Gotta have my roll of toilet paper handy."

But it never did happen because I realized that the more I anticipated my eventual break down, the more it probably won't show up. In any case, waiting for a break down is a waste of time, and if I really think about it, there's no reason to break down because I believe that God wouldn't give me more than I can handle, and the reason He probably gave me so much work to do is because He knows just how much to push me.

Speaking of God, yesterday, after teaching the kid who got excited about ice cream, I decided to go to the co-ordination meeting for LH on a whim. I originally wasn't planning to go, but for some reason, my text happy thumbs texted Ariel saying, "I'm going to try and make it to the meeting!"

Well, once I made the commitment I couldn't back out on it. I'm really happy I went though, because I realized how much I miss the LH people. It wasn't a big group yesterday, just me, Annabelle, Seo, Clement and Ariel, and we were discussing the topic of prayer. We were looking at several passages in the bible that discussed prayer, when Seo said that it'd be good for at least two people to give an introduction on Friday since John wouldn't be there.

When no one volunteered, Clement and Ariel begun telling the analogy Rhema said last week, about a table and everyone taking turns being the legs to support the table. I guess this really inspired us, because eventually we put our hands together in a pile, and said, "one, two, three whoo ha!"

I don't know what whoo ha means. We should have said something like, "one, two, three, table legs!" or "one, two, three, prayer!" or "one, two, three, Light House!"

Maybe whoo ha means all of the above.

So that's the story of how all four of us are doing the introduction on Friday. Not only is this a good way for me to practice speaking in public, but also a way for me to practice speaking for God in front of people (because otherwise I'd just be shooting the breeze). I'm really glad that Seo pushed us to share though, since it's important for our spiritual growth to share with other people once in a while.

Oh and Seo also did a super cool thing by compiling all of our verses into stanzas for a song we're singing on Friday. It's really good.

Ok I'll end here. I'm at Robarts typing this and it's SO LOUD. There's this annoying siren that's been ringing for at least two hours now. Maybe the siren is Robarts way of crying.

Robarts: [cries] It's summer time and there's no one here studying! Where are my nerds at?! I'm so lonely :'(

Honorifics and Free Tuesdays

I went out for bubble tea with my siblings, cousins and Joash tonight (Joash is my uncle who's one year younger than I am) and to my horror, I realized my cousins have started calling me Ann.

Ok before you start thinking, "uh, isn't that your name?" I have explain that no one I'm related to, who's younger than I am, has ever called me by my first name. Ever. They always call me "Atchi Ann-Ann" which means "older sister."

We were playing cards, and Michelle, my cousin from Vancouver, said, "your turn Ann."

When I heard that I was like, dude, when did this happen!?! You're not supposed to call me by my first name!

Am I just really old fashioned? This just sounds really foreign to me even though I'm completely white washed. It's like calling your parents by their first name. I'm always careful what I call people in my family when they're older than I am, since I don't want to offend anyone.

Anyway, this is just a weird pet peeve of mine. I just think calling someone older than you by their first name is disrespectful, that's why at church I always try and say "sister so and so" and brother so and so" unless I am close with them.

Moving on:
Today, I went to the ROM to do research for my seminar class. Rumor had it that students get in for free on Tuesdays but I didn't believe it, since that'd be too good to be true. But as it turns out, students DO get in free on Tuesdays! I am so impressed. I roamed around the first floor, where the Chinese, Korean and Japanese exhibit is, being all impressed by the history. I was tempted on looking at everything, I especially wanted to check out the African exhibit, but I had to remind myself that I was there to do research. Damn. You guys know where to find me on Tuesdays from now on. :D

Seriously, the ROM is so cool, you guys have to come with me sometime. IT'S FREE!

Temptation and the need to Clone Myself

Last night I sat in front of my laptop for an hour thinking of ways to blog about having to deal with temptation, and in the end coming out empty. Temptation is probably the hardest topic to blog about, since it can get really personal. In any case, it's a good thing I have my hands full since this way I can't be troubled with temptation so much.

There are different kinds of temptation. The ones that I probably come across with most often, aside from the temptation of calling in sick to work (which happens whenever I have a shift now), would have to do with guys. This is not to say that I have a lot of guys around me that are tempting or whatever, I just feel like as a girl, I have an obligation to end conversations with guys. It's like, when I have conversations with guys I'm always tempted to keep the conversation going but at the same time, I know I have to end it so I don't give the wrong impression that I'm interested.

Ok, so what I really want to blog about is a rant on my need to clone myself. I've been giving this some serious thought lately, and I seriously think that cloning myself would be the best idea. This way, with all the super cloned Ann's running around, I'd have time to do everything I want to do.

What I would send my army of clones to do:
1) One clone will be dedicated to teaching and making lesson plans. This will be the super multitasked clone that will always be high on sugar and caffein and never be low on energy. This will also be the clever clone that will be able to make SSAT lessons on a whim.

2) One clone will be dedicated to doing fun stuff with the girls. I.e. going to the beach, summerlicious, going to light house, watching movies with Jennifer, having sleepovers at Hannah's, going to Manley's birthday lunch, spending as much time with my cousins while they're here in Toronto, etc. This clone will be tanned and hip and never stressed.

3) One clone will be dedicated to summer school. This clone will have a very boring time since this clone will spend her days reading all the time, and by all the time, I mean ALL the time. (My advanced seminar class is no joke. Actually, it's far from a joke. It's murder.) This clone will also be busy writing essays and making presentations. In short, this clone will have no life and will most likely be stuck in the library most of the time.

4) One clone will be dedicated to the retail job. This clone will never call in sick because of a sunburn, and will take all the shifts given to her, which means at least five shifts a week. This clone will also take extra shifts if she can, which essentially means that this clone will be the money maker. This clone will also have to be high on sugar all the time so she can deal with angry customers properly.

And I will be the manager and make sure my clones are doing their job properly.

Problem now is, where am I going to find a machine to clone myself?!? (On a student budget too)
